Web Design & Journalism

2015-2018

Launched, designed, and served as Editor for an online TV & Film magazine, Entertainr. Created and managed content in Wordpress.

My passion for film and television and interest in journalism inspired me to launch my own online film and TV review magazine when I was fifteen which I ran for nearly three years. For this website, I decided to use Wordpress because I was attracted by the customisability of the design and functionality of the website. As I developed the site with functionality and content myself, I also began looking for other contributors to help post content more frequently and build up a consistent readership. I began meeting other writers on Twitter and Reddit who were interested in writing reviews for my website and so on top of my website administration duties, I also became Editor of the magazine. At its peak, we had seven regular contributors from four different countries and 5,000 unique monthly users.

This was really a passion project for me and a great excuse to engage more critically with the movies and TV shows I was watching while improving my writing. But Entertainr taught me a lot more in the process of launching and running it. I became quite experienced with using Wordpress, learned the major monetisation strategies of blogs, and learned some valuable lessons when it came to managing writers and content which later benefitted me in my role as Editor-in-Chief of my high school’s student paper.

Although the website is no longer live, a snapshot from the Wayback Machine reveals what the homepage looked like for a general idea of the website:

To direct more traffic to the site, I also created a Tumblr to engage with fans of the films and TV shows that our team was watching and writing about.
